How to Get Things Done

If you are like me, you want to be extremely productive on a daily basis. If you are also like me, you have a hard time getting everything accomplished that you want to in a day. Either something comes up or you get sidetracked. Whatever the reason, staying on task and being productive is difficult. Well, hopefully this article can help with that.

Before I get too far, I want to let you know a little bit about me. First, I’m a Seattle criminal attorney. Second, I own my own law firm. And third, I love to play golf. Not all of these things work well together. The criminal lawyer in me would like to take care of my clients first, the business owner in me wants to tend to business things, and the golfer in me wants to hit the links.

But I can’t do everything at once, and I can’t get everything done in one day. Here’s what I’ve done to try to maximize my time and increase my productivity on a daily basis.

First, it’s important to understand that there is no such thing as multi-tasking. It simply doesn’t exist. At best, what you have the ability to do is jump from one task to another very quickly, and very unproductively. So, instead of trying to do a whole bunch of things at once, focus on one thing for at least half an hour. Get to a good stopping point, and then move on to something else.

Second, clear your work space. That’s right, get rid of all the crap you don’t need and clean it up so you can do the work that you need to do at that time. For me, a Seattle criminal attorney, this is especially difficult, as all day long I’m picking up files and looking at them and then setting them down on my desk. They accumulate quickly.

Start with just these two things, and you’ll be getting things done faster than you’ve ever imagined.
