New mothers today really face a very confusing time. It seems like for every problem in modern motherhood there are about fifteen different solutions. Today’s mom has a smart phone where she can access one hundred different diagnoses and three hundred possible illnesses or allergic reactions every time her new baby sneezes. Add to that the usual cast of characters such as her relatives, her friends and random people she runs in to, she is really up for a confusing time when it comes to raising a baby today.
What is a mother to do? She has always been told to be as informed as possible. She has always counted on the internet to tell her things like foods to avoid while breast feeding, or even the statistics on taking a pregnancy test too early. Who would think that it would be a problem to have so many different points of view?
The problem is a new one for the modern mother. Contrary to the experience of her predecessors she is very likely to experience paralysis by analysis. The modern mother can be apt to not act quickly when needed because she has to take so much time to consider multiple opinions. This is a very inefficient and incorrect decision making process for a new mother who needs to be as effective as possible.
The new mother would do very well to figure out and prioritize her sources of information. She should decide early on who she will trust and decide to forgo other sources of information. As tempted that she might be to be an expert on any problem that may arise, she should not do so and simply count on expert opinion. By doing so, she can have much greater sanity and piece of mind. On then, can she not be a victim to the information overload so problematic for other mothers.
