Everybody will always think that photography for beginners will always start with learning about composition, settings to use, and techniques to apply. However, there is one fundamental digital photography basics and that is the way you hold your camera. As beginners, we are too excited to learn photography that we jump to whatever knowledge we need to know forgetting the basic. If we don’t know how to hold the camera properly, a good shot could be our worst shot.
Mainly we aim to take a shake-free shot. A decent photo can be ruined with a simple handling technique error. Perfect handling depends on the type of camera you use.
How to hold your camera: A digital photography basics
Use your right hand to grip the right end of the camera and position your forefinger just above the shutter button with the rest curled around the front. Modern technology develops indentions in digital camera that mimics this action. Commonly, the role of the left hand is to support the weight of the camera. If you are using a Digital SLR, the left hand is just under or around the lens.
In taking a shot, hold the camera close to your body and combine this with the grip mentioned earlier, will provide steadiness. It has been a habit of holding the camera away from you when using an LCD screen in viewing your image. This is a must change habit. As an advice, tuck your elbows in and hold the camera just a short distance away from your face.
Your bearing is as important as your grip. There is no point in perfect handling if you are unsteady in your feet. If possible lean on the wall, kneel or sit down. However, this is not always a potential option, so position yourself comfortably as you can be with feet and shoulders width apart.
